La palabra BOLLYWOOD se creó en los años 70 para demominar al cine comercial de la India. Proviene del juego de palabras entre Bombay (principal productor de este tipo de cine) y Hollywood.
Es una enorme industria que produce actualmente más de 1,000 películas al año y es la más grande y productiva en el planeta. Con un mercado de más de 1000 millones de personas en todo el mundo.
El tema más común es el melodrama, aunque también son muy comunes la acción, comedias románticas, mitología...siempre marcado por un gran colorido tanto visual y escenográfico como étnico, valores tradicionales, agudos dramas, sensualidad…
Pero lo más importante de las películas de Bollywood es la MÚSICA y la DANZA.
Los bailes en estos films, sobretodo en las más antiguas, son indios; estilos de baile clásicos, bailes históricos de cortesanas del norte de la India y bailes folklóricos. En las películas modernas se suelen mezclar estos estilos con los de Occidente (siempre con un toque hindú), aunque no es común ver estilos antiguos y modernos en una misma película.
El "héroe" o la "heroina" normalmente actuan junto a un gran grupo de bailarines/as siempre enmarcados en grandes cambios de escenarios y vestimentas.
